👶 Cold Lake Approves $150K Childcare Incentive

Cold Lake City Council has approved a $150,000 incentive program to boost childcare spaces, after being excluded from Alberta’s latest funding list. The initiative offers $1,500 per new licensed space—up to $30,000 per project—to help cover capital costs for both for-profit and non-profit operators. City officials criticized the province’s decision to overlook Cold Lake and plan to appeal. The local grant won’t cover operations but aims to offset high construction costs. Final budget approval is expected June 10, with accountability measures requiring proof of licensing and ongoing impact.

⚠️ Measles Exposure Alert Issued for Cold Lake Healthcare Centre

Alberta Health Services has issued a measles exposure alert for Cold Lake Healthcare Centre. Anyone who visited the emergency department between May 28–30 during specified evening hours may have been exposed. Those born in or after 1970 without two documented MMR vaccine doses are at higher risk. Measles is highly contagious and can lead to serious complications. If you develop symptoms such as fever, cough, or rash, stay home and call the measles hotline at 1-844-944-3434 before visiting any healthcare facility. You can also text ‘Measles’ to 88111 for updates.

🔥 Wildfire Near Winefred & Grist Lakes Forces Evacuation, Remains Out of Control

A massive wildfire near Winefred Lake and Grist Lake—northwest of Cold Lake—prompted a mandatory evacuation on June 4 and a local state of emergency. The fire, known as Caribou Lake Wildfire (LWF090), is burning out of control, spanning over 64,000 hectares. Believed to be human-caused, the blaze threatens nearby cabins and structures. Fire crews, including Lac La Biche County’s Wildland Urban Interface team, are working to protect property. Shifting winds continue to complicate efforts.
